UUs on the 8fold path

Filed under: Buddhism — Rick Heller @ 7:11 pm

My second published non-fiction magazine article, Unitarian Universalists on the Eightfold Path, has gone out as part of the cover package of UUWorld magazine.

The genesis of the article was a conversation I had with a gentleman on a plane to Denver last summer. He is a former UU who is now a Buddhist teacher. He put me in touch with the Colorado contingent of UU Buddhists whom I interviewed by phone. I also interviewed Massachusetts UU Buddhists in person and attended several meditation practices in the Boston area.

The UU Buddhists I spoke to were all humanists, as far as I could determine. They did not believe in rebirth, and reinterpreted karma in this-worldly terms of personal responsibility. Such Buddhism can contribute to humanism by providing a practice that helps in the tough times, in the painful times. There is no magic to meditation and mindfulness. Neuroscience is just starting to tease out the reasons how and why they work.
